Painting & Language Learning

Painting & Language Learning

Hey, how are you? I've been good :) Just painting and dealing with life & all its challenges.

Learning to paint is almost like learning a new language, except it's a visual language rather than a spoken one. And there's no words either.

Something you may not know is that for the past 4 years now, I've been learning a 2nd language. I started out slowly and it took me a while to figure out what I even needed to learn or what to focus on.

I'm learning Malay, which isn't exactly a widely used language and finding resources for learning the spoken version is incredibly difficult.

There's a couple books written about learning to speak colloquial, every day spoken Malay, and all the info is incorrect or actually too formal.

Going through this entire process of learning it on my own has made me realize that the process isn't much different than learning to paint.

A lot of the ingredients necessary for learning a language are the same for learning to paint:

You need patience, a lot of it. Hundreds of hours of it, literally.

You need consistency. The more you interact with the language, the more you'll learn & acquire.

You need persistence. It's helpful if you have a reason to keep going. Keep trying.

You'll make mistakes. There's absolutely no way around it. They are unavoidable.

You can improve. It'll be slow but it can happen. You probably won't even realize it.

Through all of these things, you'll gain understanding. Whether it's learning a language or the language of painting. It doesn't matter.

The cool thing about painting is that there's always more to learn. More experiments to do and new things to explore.

Hope you enjoy your week! 😊 Try to do at least 1 painting or piece of art.

You won't regret it in the long run.
