New Paintings & What I Learned from a Month of Painting

New Watercolor Paintings

Hey there, I hope you're doing well :) Let's talk about March.

March was a month full of focus and painting for me. I was somehow able to create 58 paintings - almost 2 per day. But not all of them were good, that's for sure.

I haven't shared any of my new paintings yet with anyone, so I thought I'd share some of them here first with my newsletter readers.

These are my top 10 favorites from all the paintings I created. I'll share some close-ups in a minute so you can see more details.

If you'd like to read about my full process (with a real example), what I learned, and more - you can check out a recent post I wrote here about this past month of painting: I Made 58 Paintings in One Month - What I Learned

All of these paintings are inspired by places I’ve traveled to or people in my life. Having inspirations like this allows me to connect to my work on a deeper level. Painting these places and people brings me a sense of peace and I’m happy I get to share it with you.

I hope you will enjoy these paintings as well 😊

You can check out all the paintings, sizes, close-ups, and read the stories behind each painting here:

Before I go, I'll leave you with some short bullet points of what I learned this past month.

  • Preparation before painting (making sketches, planning compositions, value studies) is just as important as the painting process itself, don't neglect this stage if you want a great painting.
  • There will be bad painting days. One day this past month, I did 4 paintings in one day and they all sucked, seriously. But the next day I made better ones and improved.
  • Even though I made 58 paintings, only 36 were actually good quality. That's around 5 or 6 out of every 10 paintings. You won't always get a good painting. Just keep going and learning.
  • Let your painting sit for a day or two, then look at it again. You might be able to slightly improve it and make it a better painting with a few minor additions or tweaks.
  • Don't be afraid to go opaque with your watercolors. Save this as a final stage and use sparingly.
  • Sometimes 1 attempt at a painting just isn't enough, don't be afraid to paint it again and slightly change the composition in some way. Most likely it'll be a better painting due to practice.
  • Enjoy the process and focus on why you started in the first place. Have fun with painting.

More to come soon. Enjoy your week 🙂

Reply to this email and let me know which painting is your favorite. I'd love to hear from you.

Painting & Language Learning Hey, how are you? I've been good :) Just painting and dealing with life & all its challenges. Learning to paint is almost like learning a new language, except it's a visual language rather than a spoken one. And there's no words either. Something you may not know is that for the past 4 years now, I've been learning a 2nd language. I started out slowly and it took me a while to figure out what I even needed to learn or what to focus on. I'm learning Malay, which...

Exploring Gouache & More Thank you to everyone who responded to my email last week and shared your thoughts and experiences. I was quite surprised to see so many responses, so thank you for that. It's always good to know I'm not alone in this madness of art creation :) I have a lot to share with you this week, I hope you won't mind. To start with, I've been exploring with gouache a tiny bit more and I've decided to try some master copies (as an exercise) and also create some color charts to...
